Principal's Message

Mrs. Cora Suddoth, Principal
Eugene Field Elementary School reflects the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural community of East Rogers Park. Illustrative of this diversity are the fourteen languages represented among our student population. Nearly 600 children, ranging in age from fourth to eighth grades, are being educated in our main building and five mobile units. The fourth and fifth grades follow the self-contained classroom model. The program for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students is a departmentalized model that better prepares adolescents for their high school experience. Children with special needs are served in appropriate ways in self- contained special education classes, by resource, and in general education classrooms. Additionally, inclusion teachers also serve special needs students in general education classrooms. To further support student needs, Eugene Field’s case manager, social workers, psychologist, and Group Homes liaison coordinate services within and outside the school for students and their families.
Additionally, Eugene Field School offers a transitional Spanish bilingual program and a TESOL program for speakers of languages other than Spanish. A Bosnian language teacher supports students who speak Bosnian. Eugene Field also offers instruction in Literacy and Writing to students through the Chicago Public School Rogers Park Magnet Cluster Program. A gifted Mathematics program serves eighth graders ready for high school Algebra. Teachers and students are able to improve and implement reading skills through a university partnership with National-Louis University. Plafform Learning a SES program, provide other assistance to students during and after school tutorials.
The facilities provided at Eugene Field School encourage students to go beyond text book learning. A science lab, a math lab and a computer lab with Internet access provide hands-on experiences to complement classroom learning. In addition, all classrooms have wireless Internet connection. In the fine arts domain, Eugene Field School provides all students with art instruction and the opportunity to participate in the Chicago Symphony choir is offered as well. The sports program supports football, basketball, wrestling, chess and cheerleading for students. In addition, teachers work independently and in groups to obtain extras for their students through grants. Special performances, materials, visits from zoos and museums and cross-school activities are some of the opportunities which teachers have provided for their students through grant writing. Eugene Field School embodies the goal of Keeping Children First in every way.
This website is designed to help students get the most out of their years at Eugene Field. Inside you will find information that will be helpful in getting off to a good start. We realize the importance of developing in each child an attitude of self-respect and self-worth. Parents, we feel, are partners in the important job of educating the children of this community. We welcome your suggestions and solicit your participation in the monthly Local School Council, NCLB and in the Bilingual Advisory Committee meetings. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to call the school at 534-2030. Working together, we can make Eugene Field the best school it can possibly be.
